South Africa climate and when to go South Africa

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Climate
Seasons are opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere; winter is June-September and summer November-March. The greater part of South Africa has a very sunny climate with much fine, settled weather. The southern coastal regions have their most changeable weather in winter and the eastern coastlands and the interior their most rainy weather in summer.
Daily sunshine hours are high over most of the country, averaging eight to ten hours a day around the year. The cloudiest regions are the western and eastern coasts , particularly in the summer months.

When to go
High season is from December - March. However, South Africa has winters which make traveling at these times one of the destinations best kept secrets. As well, winters are very short and temperatures in the mid twenties C and upwards occur throughout the year. Only evenings and early mornings can be fairly cold in winter time.
The low season is an increasingly popular time to visit the Cape. It is not always hot enough to sit around on a beach, but it is usually mild and pleasant enough for touring. August and September are wonderful months to see spring flowers in bloom.

Kruger area
On the east side - including the Kruger Park area - there is sunshine year round. Summers are hot, with short, heavy rains; winters sunny, dry and sometimes cold at night. Game viewing is particularly good between May and September, when the water shortage encourages animals to gather at waterholes, and the low vegetation makes it easier to spot them in the bush.

KwaZulu Natal
KwaZulu Natal enjoys a subtropical climate, with plenty of sunshine year round. Summers are hot and can be humid, with sudden downpours. You may prefer to avoid high summer for a touring visit.
